President Obama proclaimed January 2010 as National Slavery and Human Trafficking prevention month.
Congress is joining the Senate in forming a resolution to set January as a permanent month of awareness for those who are denied their basic fundamental human rights by human trafficking in our society. Feburary 1st is the official National Freedom Day in America. National Freedom Day honors the signing of the resolution that proposed the Thirteeenth Amendment to the U.S. Constituition on Feb. 1, 1865. Abraham Lincoln signed the resolution to outlaw slavery. TheThirteenth amendment can still continue to abolish slavery today as it is regarded as compelling law which overides any commericial or economic interests. The Supreme Court has ruled that whatever form slavery can take, they all are unconstitutional under the Thirteenth amendment. The court has already ruled that any form of labor that includes a person who is controlled through violence or it's threat, who cannot walk away or choose to change their employers is slavery. The Thirteenth amendment forbids any U.S. company to engage directly in any commerce that supports slavery .This rule applies to businesses operating outside the U.S. also.
January 11th will mark National Human trafficking Awareness Day which was set by the 110 congress and passed by the Senate in June 2007. The date is set to support the goals of raising awareness to end human trafficking in America and throughout the world.
The U.S. government estimates 17,500 victims of trafficking occur each year. These figures are reported by the government to be well below the actual real numbers.
The U.S. state Department reports that 80% of those trafficked are women and at least 50% of them children.
According to the world's top expert on human slavery,Kevin Bales of Free The Slaves,27 million slaves exisit in our world today.Slavery, though different from trafficking, involves the same motives and produces the same outcome, dehumanization of the person.See World Affairs Blog, Children site for more information on this article.More information on the Thirteenth Amendment can be found in Kevin Bales book, Ending Slavery.See article below.
